Calming the South China Sea

Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south.

The Korea Strait is a sea passage between Japan and South Korea, connecting the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan in the northwest Pacific Ocean.

The East China Sea lies to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, the Bashi Channel of the Luzon Strait directly to the south, and the South China Sea to the southwest.

The major test here will be whether China is willing to accept the status quo in the East and South China Seas.

The Yellow Sea is the name given to the northern part of the East China Sea, which is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean.

Its southern tip lies on the Korea Strait and the East China Sea.

All of this is fueling nationalist sentiment in China and South Korea, and making even more dangerous the already volatile territorial disputes in the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan.

This big ship here was the one sailed in by Zheng He in the early 15th century on his great voyages around the South China Sea, the East China Sea and across the Indian Ocean to East Africa.

The situation near China, whether in the East China Sea, near Japan, or in the West Pacific, is completely different.

A recent announcement by the provincial government in Hainan, China, which has responsibility for the South China Sea territories claimed by China, has probably reinforced that impulse.

The Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea are marginal seas of the Pacific Ocean.

Of that percentage, a majority is from South Asia, followed by groups from China, South Korea, Southeast Asia and Latin America.

The fears of China s rulers, I suspect, do not bode well for reaching a peaceful resolution of its territorial disputes in the South and East China Seas.

In the south of China, the situation is different.

It is surrounded by the South China Sea on the east, south, and west, and borders the Guangdong city of Shenzhen to the north over the Shenzhen River.

The Spratly Islands are disputed by many states in the area, and the entirety of the South China Sea is claimed by China.

It is bordered on the north and west by Jiangsu, on the south by Zhejiang, and on the east by the East China Sea.

As good news, the wild South China tiger has not been extinct.

The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

One positive, and universally welcomed, step that the US could take would be finally to ratify the Law of the Sea Convention, whose principles must be the foundation for peaceful resource sharing in the South China Sea as elsewhere.

The ongoing disputes in the East China Sea and the South China Sea mean that Japan s top foreign policy priority must be to expand the country s strategic horizons.

TOKYO They don t look like much, those few uninhabited rocks in the East China Sea between Okinawa and Taiwan, and a couple of tiny islets in the Sea of Japan, inhabited by a few token fishermen and some South Korean Coast Guard officials.

As recent events in the East and South China Seas show, China sometimes attempts to strong arm its neighbors.

The region is bounded by the Black Sea to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Aegean Sea to the west.

To the east, the Aegean coast of Asia Minor was colonized first, followed by Cyprus and the coasts of Thrace, the Sea of Marmara and south coast of the Black Sea.

The organisation Save China's Tigers has attempted to rewild the South China Tiger, with a breeding and training programme in South Africa.

More neighboring states have more claims to more parts of the South China Sea and tend to push those claims with more strident nationalism than is the case with any comparable body of water.

Meanwhile, Asia is being roiled by intensifying territorial disputes in the South and East China Seas, as countries revive old claims against each other.

A controversy exists about the sea name, with South Korea promoting the appellation East Sea ( ).
