Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) () is a Portuguese state owned banking corporation, and the largest bank in Portugal.

History 1876 Caixa Geral de Depósitos was founded under the aegis of the Junta de Crédito Público.

This was followed by the creation of Caixa de Aposentações for wage earners and Monte de Piedade Nacional, a pawnbroking operation.

1993 Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) became the majority shareholder in Banque Franco Portugaise d Outre Mer.

In particular , a delegation of members of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs visited the ECB on 22 October 2001 in order to exchange views with the members of the Executive Board . Moreover , on 27 June a delegation of ECB experts met members of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs at the European Parliament to discuss issues related to the improvement of crossborder retail payment services in euro .
